SUMMARY:Black Book Club - The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and insightful discussion at the Black Book Club as we explore The Message by acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates. Coates\, known for his unflinching commentary on race and identity in America\, delivers a work that challenges societal norms\, provokes thought\, and inspires dialogue. \nAbout the Book\nThe Message invites readers to grapple with questions of systemic racism\, the enduring impacts of slavery\, and the personal and collective journey toward liberation. Through vivid storytelling and meticulous research\, Coates examines the complexities of being Black in a society shaped by historical and ongoing inequities. \nDiscussion Highlights:\n📚 Quotable Passages: \n\n“The fight for freedom is not won in a single generation. It is the burden we inherit\, but also the hope we must cultivate.”\n“To know your history is to understand your power and the power that has been denied.”\nThese powerful lines are just a glimpse into the poignant reflections we’ll discuss together.\n\n📚 Perspectives on the Palestinian Struggle:\nOne of the most compelling aspects of The Message is its nuanced reflection on global struggles for justice\, including parallels drawn between the Black American experience and the Palestinian fight for self-determination. Coates critiques systems of oppression on a global scale\, challenging readers to consider the interconnectedness of liberation movements. His empathetic exploration of the Palestinian struggle has sparked debate\, with some hailing it as a necessary broadening of the conversation on human rights\, while others critique its stance as polarizing. \n📚 Controversies and Conversations:\nThe book has sparked debate for its raw critique of American policies and social structures. Some readers laud Coates for his courage in addressing hard truths\, while others criticize him for what they perceive as a pessimistic tone. The discussion will provide a safe space to unpack these varied perspectives\, inviting critical and respectful dialogue. \n📚 Themes to Explore: \n\nThe intergenerational impact of systemic oppression.\nThe role of art and literature in shaping cultural awareness.\nThe tension between hope and despair in the fight for justice.\n\nWhether you’ve read the book cover to cover\, skimmed a few pages\, or simply want to listen and learn\, this event is for you. Together\, we’ll reflect\, challenge\, and uplift one another in a welcoming environment that celebrates Black voices and perspectives. \nCome ready to share your thoughts or simply soak in the conversation. Let’s explore The Message and its relevance to our lives and communities today. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Black Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the world of Zora Neale Hurston at our next Black Book Club\, where we’ll be diving into her acclaimed autobiography\, *Dust Tracks on a Road*. This gathering offers a chance to explore the life and legacy of one of the most influential figures of the Harlem Renaissance\, even if you haven’t yet had the chance to read the book. \n*Dust Tracks on a Road* takes readers on a journey through Hurston’s early years in Eatonville\, Florida—the first all-Black town to be incorporated in the United States—where her inquisitive spirit was nurtured by a community that valued storytelling and independence. The book also provides a candid look at her rise as a prominent writer and anthropologist\, offering insights into her complicated relationships with race\, gender\, and identity. \nWe’ll discuss Hurston’s vibrant prose\, her keen observations on Black life in America\, and how her work continues to inspire and provoke thought today. Our conversation will touch on the significance of Eatonville in shaping her voice\, her controversial views on race relations\, and the impact of her literary contributions. \nThis is more than just a book discussion—it’s an opportunity to connect with others who appreciate the richness of Black literature and to celebrate the enduring relevance of Hurston’s work. Whether you’re familiar with Hurston’s writing or completely new to it\, you’ll find a welcoming space to engage with her story and share your perspectives. We look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Brunch & Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Since we had a hiatus for the summer\, we will have a combined Brunch and Book club as our welcome back event. Everyone in the group is welcome (all genders). It will be a potluck so bring a dish if you can but don’t stress if you can’t. \nWhen: Saturday\, September 1\, 1pm\nWhere: Marina’s Rooftop – Jungstrasse 8/46\, 1020 Wien \nWe will be eating first and discussing the book later. There will be many people there\, some discussing the book\, some not\, so please PSVP. If you are bringing a dish or drinks\, please mention it in the comments. \nFor this month’s book club\, we will be reading What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky\, by Lesley Arimah. Please feel free to join us for an intimate discussion. \nLooking forward to enjoying the wonderful cuisine rooftop of our host – Marina. \n“One of the pleasures of reading Lesley Nneka Arimah’s debut collection is the feeling of being thrown off balance: not knowing where this playful and adventurous new talent will take you next. The 12 stories that make up What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky are set in Nigeria and the US\, sometimes moving between the two (the author was born in the UK\, has lived in Nigeria and is now based in the States). Arimah’s focus is on the lives of girls and women\, and while her perspective is often bleak\, the collection is bracing and varied.” – https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/sep/02/what-it-means-when-man-fallsfrom-the-sky-lesley-nneka-arimah-review \nhttps://www.amazon.com/What-Means-When-Man-Falls/dp/0735211027?tag=midl2103-20 \nhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31522415-what-it-means-when-a-man-falls-from-the-sky \nHere is the title story https://static1.squarespace.com/static/565c3d39e4b027c789ba5b70/t/5731ee5a9f7266896301bec7/1462890076439/What+It+Means+When+A+Man+Falls+From+The+Sky+-+Arimah.pdf

SUMMARY:“Rememory: Ritual Blackness and Beyond” by Khaleb Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Khaleb Brooks is a multi- media artist whose work is founded on research of ancestral knowledge and oral histories. Through painting\, sculpture and photography Khaleb explores the role of memory in disrupting ideologies that maintain time as linear and fixed. The solo exhibition “Rememory: Ritual Blackness and Beyond” deals with thoughts and concepts of blackness as ritual and spaces of non- being as well as attemps to transcend these spaces. \n\nVERNISSAGE: “”Rememory: Ritual Blackness and Beyond”\n14th of June at 6pm\nLINE UP tba\n*\nEXHIBITION OPENING HOURS/OPEN STUDIO:\n(the artist will be present)\nMon-Thurs 11am-4pm\nSat 4-7pm\nSun 1-4pm\n*\nQTIBPoC COMIC WORKSHOP\nDATE tba \nKhaleb Brooks will host a comic book workshop where we will discuss character development\, storyboarding and the history of Queer and POC comics. ♥ please register with an email to we.dey.in@gmail.com\n*\nFILMSCREENING OPEN FOR ALL\nDATE tba \nScreening of short documentary by Intersex activist Pidgeon Pagonis\, called The Son I Never Had.
